After Henry’s toast came
Charlotte’s, then Gideon and Sophie’s, Cecily and Gabriel’s. They
praised Tessa and gently mocked Will, but it was the kind of mockery born out of love, and Will laughed as much as anyone—well,
anyone save perhaps Jessamine. She was present in ghostly form,
and Will could see her rocking from side to side with amusement,
her blond hair drifting in an invisible breeze.
As the dinner came to a close, the silences between Will and Tessa
drew out more and more. They were not uncomfortable silences; far
from it. There was something else, something between them that
crackled like firelight. Every time Tessa glanced at Will, her cheeks
turned pink and she bit her lip. Will wondered if it would be considered rude if he leaped onto the table and ordered everyone out of the
Institute as he urgently needed to have a private conversation with
